Guns are not secure βover 750 firearms have been recovered by GRPD in 2021.
Attempted Murder with a gun is up 175% since 2015.
In 2020, there were over 600 weapon firing offenses (a 540% increase compared to 2015).
The number of reported stolen firearms increased by 39% in the past three years.
Over 200 firearms were reported stolen to GRPD in 2021 (as of October 2021).
Over 83% of guns stolen were in a vehicle or unsecured home.

Teach young people about gun safety
Report a found weapon to a responsible adult or police officer

Provide gun locks and training to help remind gun owners to lock and secure their firearms

A public awareness campaign to focus on educating and training the community on gun safety, and evidence-based best practices to address the public health crisis of violence and trauma within the City of Grand Rapids.
By partnering neighborhood associations with the Grand Rapids Police Department and other organizations, this would help spread a unifying message, community-wide, in an attempt to reduce violence within the city.

Reduce the number of stolen guns available on the streets by promoting safe gun ownership trainings
Reduce the number of shots fired, injuries, and deaths within the City of Grand Rapids
Reduce the number of young people interacting with the Criminal Justice system with early intervention
Reduce the amount of trauma the community is dealing with relating to gun violence

D.I.C.E. - GRPD crime data & analytics are shared with community organizers & local GR groups. Together, they identify collaborative crime prevention strategies that effectively reduce crime without a primary focus on law enforcement response.
