Catalytic Converter Thefts are Skyrocketing!

Image from the NICB about Catalytic converter thefts by month in the United States.

Thieves can remove a catalytic converter quickly, in as little as two minutes, and the precious metals in the converters can fetch them a handsome amount. Depending on the age and type of vehicle, the platinum, palladium, and rhodium in the converter can net a thief between $100 to over $800 each.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported the number of catalytic converter thefts rose from 3,389 in 2019 to 14,433 in 2020.

In 2021, in Grand Rapids, in addition to this crime occurring at private residences, catalytic converters were also stolen from vehicles in parking lots at several apartment complexes, and businesses, and charitable organizations, including employee parking lots.

Avoid Becoming a Victim

• Park in a garage or in your driveway if possible

• Park in a well-lit area. Consider installing a bright motion sensor light

• Install a catalytic converter security device. There are several types of cage or shield devices available.

• Fleet vehicles and those infrequently used should be parked in a secured, alarmed, well-lit area.
